Windows XP on VMware Fusion Network problems

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Every once in a while i get this message in Windows XP VM “Network connection has limited or no connection”. Some people suggest to turn your VM settings to NAT. However, this was already set to NAT. To fix the problem, quit VMware, delete the plist files in your ~/Library/Preferences/

com.vmware.fusion.plist
com.vmware.fusionDaemon.plist

This should restore your network connection.

Apple + Microsoft vs Google

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

The days are numbered for all the Mac vs PC debates. Apple and Microsoft may be once again harmoniously holding hands as they skip down digital lane to beat the crap out of the neighbourhood bully that is Google.

Now that Google has their own phone, own OS, own voice channel (US only, so far), own search and own applications – this is an all out strike against Apple who have had similar products, even before the search giant had.

It appears that Apple maybe ditching Google’s search string in favour of Microsoft’s “Bing!”. Many Mac users are like, wtf mate. And it’s rumored that Apple are even creating their own search engine. High hopes.

Anyways, competition is always grand.

Safari out, Firefox 3.5 wins

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I’m complete with Firefox now. I used to like it, but didn’t love it. It didn’t feel like a real OS X application. Now it does (mostly). It adds tonnes of new features, such as HTML5 spec components, such as the “video” tag – where you don’t have to require Flash to play a movie (finally). CSS3 elements such as shadow, rounded corners, and a killer JS engine.

One of my big-little gripes was that you couldn’t drag the app from the bottom of the window. In all other OS X apps you can. I frequently do it. Now it does! And it’s just as fun, if not more fun in Windows!

Go treat yourself to a lovely new Firefox
today and stick the finger to IE8. Available for both PC and Mac.

p.s. One gripe… It still doesn’t implement the OS X dictionary.

New Microsoft ads, sort of funny

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

New viral adverts, promoting Microsoft’s latest browser IE8 are actually a little bit funny.

At first i thought it was going to be another Seinfaild, but this one actually made me snigger:

I think it’s the act of making it look like it’s been poorly edited which got me.

The annoyance factor

Friday, June 19th, 2009

MS Entourage is an annoying little bugger. Typical bloated software from MS which has so much going on, on the interface its quite frightening to realise that it’s “just an email/notes/calendar” application.

But I tried to receive an email with a JS attachment and was immediately blocked. Hmph.. i thought. Must be able to save the file somehow.

NO! MS Entourage just blocks the attachment altogether, and there’s no solution… or is there? This is MS help, at it’s best:

MS Bing doesn’t care about your accessibility needs

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

And why should they?!

Microsoft have recently released Bing and there’s a lot of buzz about it. Quite frankly, it does give good results. But is it enough to sway Google?

Unless MS subconsciously adds it in to its browsers (wait, they’ve done that – redirected the msn search address to bing) and include it in their upcoming OS, people will probably continue to use what they know.

I’ve noticed a friend of mine, often typing in google into the address bar, rather than using Safari’s search box. As she’s only really used IE6 before, old habits die hard (yippekaye mf!!). (On another note, she loves Chrome, tabs, and the top sites page).

So on one account, that shows that the term “google it” makes them go to the website Google and use their product.

“Bing it”, “i just binged your name and got your facebook page lolz”, “oh noes, bingz down?!” – Added to the fact the site is ugly as the inside of a freshly used nappie, the name reminds me of the show worst comedy show evah, which makes me frown, Friends – with Chandler Bing! The funny one (apparently). Just laugh when you hear others laughing or wait for the flashing light.

Oh and another thing on design. Great going with accessibility MS. When images are turned off, you can’t see your (probably redundant anyways) navigation at the top. Plus you’ve got some stupid JS image injector which forces that retarded background image in – even if you don’t want images, you’re feed one ghastly one.

bing-bong

End rant.

[update] hah, someone at work just sent an email around referring to MS Bing as Chandler Bing!

Mac & PC gaming… DRM

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I’ve been wanting to test the limits of my new computer recently, by buying a game.

I’ve always liked FPS games, since the days of Wolf3D, Doom, Quake etc.

Problem is… DRM.

It doesn’t matter if I install it on Mac or PC, I still have to register the hardware with the software ONLINE, before being able to play my legitimate game. I’m waiting for my internet, which will probably be another 2 weeks after my phone line is installed.

Most games I’m looking at have low ratings as they mostly have the DRM “SecuRom”. Valve uses Steam to authenticate your purchase online. I’m prepared to pay for a legal copy, but don’t want to be restricted in how I can use that game.

I’m thinking about just taking my old laptop to a wifi pub and pirating a game. Until game publishers can produce a game which doesn’t require heafty DRM protocols, I’m telling them to “stick it to their faces”…

Deleting emails

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Do you guys ever delete emails? I most certainly delete spam, and junkemails, but never delete normal mail. People at my work delete emails that are three months old!! I can’t for the life of me, understand why. Joel reckons cos its gunks up the server, but shouldn’t the server do some kinda archive thing?

I usually bring the email down to my computer then store it in an archive folder. Cos what if i need to search for an email thats ages old?! Tough luck Australia! You’ve deleted that lolcat email!!

To delete or archive – is my question.
